Mystery shopping - demystified!

I have been mystery shopping for a while now so thought I'd share my thoughts on it and tell you what companies I use.

Mystery shopping can be a great way to get a free meal or try out a new product. They often don't pay too well so don't give up your day job just yet! The earnings can range from a couple of pounds for a quick product enquiry in a store to overnight hotel stays all paid for. I have many years experience in catering and retail management so I've been on the receiving end too! The reports you give can be a very valuable tool for businesses to learn from so it's important to be completely unbiased and honest.

Some weeks I'll have no mystery shops to complete and some weeks can be jam packed so you really can't rely on it for a regular income. It is a great way to earn a bit extra as you can generally pick and choose the days and times you complete the mystery shops. I'm saving all my earnings for my holiday fund!

Once you're all signed up I find the best thing to do is to check the jobs available every day, or a few times of day if you're having a slow week! They do email you with jobs as they become available but the best jobs go so quickly I like to be ahead of the game. Always read the briefs very carefully, sometimes I feel the assignment is really not worth the fee they want to pay you so I pass it up. When you've been accepted to do a mystery shop print out your paperwork and read through it carefully to make sure you understand as you might not get paid if you make a mistake. Always check the dates, time and address etc (I once mystery shopped the wrong shop!). When you've completed your tasks fill in your paperwork as soon as possible and with as much detail as possible. Keep your paperwork for the time stated (usually 6 months) as you may get asked questions at a later date. If you have any queries it's best to get touch with the contact for that assignment as soon as possible, they are usually really friendly and helpful.

I find the websites for these mystery shopping companies are pretty basic and can be a little confusing at first but do persevere and you'll soon get the hang of it. Do keep a good record of your earnings, fees with dates so you can check against bank account to make sure you've been paid correctly. You will also need to declare your earnings but I believe not the reimbursements, please do some more research if you're unsure.
The payments are sometimes a few days after you've completed the assignments or sometimes a month, it varies between each company but they all will require your bank details.

Here's the list of companies I've actually used, please let me know if you've used others that you think are good!

http://www.gapbuster.com/ - McDonald's, Morrisons, Screwfix, Pizza Hut, Spar and Shell.

https://online.mystery-shoppers.co.uk/shoppersignup.asp - various high street shops and financial.

https://www.grassrootsmysteryshopping.com/msw_pnlExtApply.aspx - various high street shops.

http://uk.marketforce.com/register/?ref=198&reu=1075358 * - various shops, restaurants, opticians, hotels etc.

For those who forget to use coupons.

For those who forget to use coupons there are phone apps available to download for free which give you money back AFTER you've shopped.

I'll list the ones I use but please comment and let me know if there are other good ones out there!

The first app I started using was http://www.shopitize.com and I use it in two ways. First of all, if I buy essentials throughout the week I always check if any of the items I bought had any money off on the app when I get home. All you need to do is follow the instructions on the app then scan your bar code and take a photo of your receipt.

The second way I use the app is when I plan a coupon shop. You can use the app alongside other coupons so sometimes you get really good deals or even free products! For example if there is a 50p off a product that is £1 and you also have a paper/printed 50p off coupon.....boom.....free product! I use http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ to look for the best prices and best use of coupons. Mysupermarket also has an app for cash back but I don't really like it so maybe comment below if you'd like me to update this post to include it.

There are often extra special offers around special occasions and events such as Father's day and the upcoming football. So it's a good idea to check a couple of times a week. The current methods of payment are PayPal and BACS transfer. You may be charged 3.4% paypal fee plus 20p so perhaps BACS is better. Please read the terms and conditions and make your own mind up.

The next app I use frequently is https://www.quidco.com/clicksnap/offers/all/ which is part of http://www.quidco.com/user/919812/1859242/ * This app is good for Aldi and Lidl shoppers as I don't believe they take paper/printed coupons other than their own (please correct me if I'm wrong!) Do check the shop you want to claim for is included which is shown just underneath the offer with the dates valid.

This app has had a few try me free offers on lately and if you know me you'll know I can't turn down a freebie! I find this app a little more straight forward than Shopitize and you just select the offers you want to claim and take a photo of your receipt. Again please do read through their terms and conditions and make up your own mind.

Similar to Clicksnap is http://www.checkoutsmart.com/ and I believe is run by the same company. This means you can't use the same offer on Checkoutsmart and Clicksnap. Again there are offers on here for Aldi, Lidl and Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Morrisons and I'm sure I remember seeing M & S on there too. So again check it a couple of times a week or if planning isn't your thing just check all the apps after you've shopped. Checkout smart has fee of 5% of your balance when you withdraw your earnings. Again please do read through their terms and conditions and make up your own mind.

http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/laumar43 * also had an app which has in store earnings available on it. What I like about this app is that it's not just supermarket type offers but also high street shops. For example there is currently £5 cash back when you spend £20 at The Works in store. Again please check the stores and dates that are valid for the offers you want. Also again check out their terms and conditions.

As a final note, hang on to your all receipts until you know your offer is going to be paid as sometimes you have to re submit a photo if the receipt is a little blurry etc. I just keep them under a paperweight in the kitchen till I know I've got the offer. Then I file them (loser I know!)

Any questions please comment below and I'll do my best to answer them.
Happy couponing!

Baby Freebies

This post is inspired by trying to find a comprehensive list of baby freebies recently for a friend. It seems most of the lists I could find are a little out of date and not a complete list of all that is out there. I thought I would do my own research and put all the links in one place. Please do comment below if you've found something I haven't listed. I'm not sponsored in any way by any of these links.

When signing up for all these things you might want to consider setting up a spare email address in case you get bombarded with advertising emails etc. Please read any small print carefully. Also please be aware most of these 'clubs' are essentially trying to sell you something, the freebies and coupons can be great but do your research before using those coupons!

When purchasing all those baby essentials don't forget to use a cash back website. I've earned over £1000 in just a couple of years! The topcashback and quicdo are referral links. Once you've joined you can get your own referral link to earn even more! AND it goes without saying use google for any discount codes that might be available.
